For every aspiring engineer, (Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination) IIT JEE is a topic of discussion. Cracking the exam is every aspirant’s dream. Only a few, however, are successful.
What is JEE Exam?
The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and Central Board of Secondary education (CBSE), New Delhi introduced the national level common entrance exam called Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is constituted by two different examinations: the JEE Main and the JEE Advanced.
JEE is an all-India examination administered by the Indian Institutes of Technology in eight IIT zones across the country (including IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati). From 2019 onwards, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is vested with the authority to conduct the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main examination.
JEE Main
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) is a computer-based online test conducted by National Testing Agency for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate courses in top engineering institutes in India. It mainly comprises two papers. Paper-I is for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses and is conducted in a Computer Based Test mode. Paper-II is for admission to B.Arch and B.Planning courses and will also be administered via computer-based testing, with the exception of one paper, the ‘Drawing Test,’ which will be administered via pen and paper or offline mode. From January 2020 an additional Paper – III is being introduced for B.Planning courses separately.
JEE (Main) will be conducted in multiple sessions for admissions in the next academic year. Candidates will thus benefit in the following ways:
- Candidates will have multiple opportunities to improve their scores in the examination if they fail to do their best in the first attempt without wasting the whole academic year.
- First-time test takers will gain first-hand experience with an examination and will be able to identify their mistakes in order to improve their next attempt.
- Droppers would not have to waste a full year if they drop.
- Anyone who missed the exam due to circumstances beyond their control will not have to retake it after a year.
JEE Advanced
The JEE-Advanced examination is mainly conducted by IITs and the students must clear JEE Main to appear for JEE Advanced. It will have a total score of 306 marks, with three sections per subject. Furthermore, each section includes a different type of MCQ, and each MCQ may have multiple correct answers. This distinction must be kept in mind. Examine the question pattern and mark distribution before taking any exam to effectively prepare.
JEE Advanced is considerably more difficult than JEE Mains. As a result, students must increase their preparation accordingly. To attempt the JEE Advanced paper, follow these simple steps:
- Get a good night’s sleep the night before the exam. A good night’s sleep is crucial to concentrating throughout the entire 6 hours of the exam.
- Please read the instructions carefully. You will have time to read them all. Pay attention to all the instructions.
- Look at the paper calmly and decide which section or questions you want to tackle first.
- One attempt is not enough. Mark any questions you left unanswered or that require further revision after each round. It is important to attempt the questions of an easy to moderate level first. About 80% of the questions fall into this category.
- Try to answer the questions you are confident about within the first hour. This will give you the confidence you need to continue solving the paper.
- You should attempt the subject in which you are more confident first.
- Leave the difficult multiple-choice questions for the second round.
- Mark the values and important data as you read the question for the first time. This will come in handy later when answering the question.
- Organize your rough work properly. You should not answer half the question in one place and the other half in another.
- Answer the questions in a proper manner. Make sure your handwriting is legible

Students can take the JEE Mains exam as many times as they want, but they can only apply twice in two years for the JEE Advanced.
